The Rainiest City in America!  Note we said city, not "spot".  Ketchikan reports an average annual rain fall of 162 inches. Leading to the motto: There is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Photos taken while cruising aboard the Norwegian Wind, September 2002, and Carnival Spirit, September 2004.

Above - Can't afford the Mt. Roberts Tramway in Juneau.  Here is the poor mans version (actually, a great free ride up to a wonderful lodge).  Funicular system from the top end of Creek Street, straight into the main lodge area of the Cape Fox Lodge.  Carnival Spirit is in the background.  Downtown is between the lodge and the ship.  The Cape Fox is native Alaskan owned, and below are totem poles located outside the lodge.

Above - Holland America's "Volendam"  berthed in Ketchikan.  By her bow is the Tongass Trading Store, a great place to shop.

View of another ferry in the Ketchikan yard.

Southbound heading down the channel towards the cruise pier in downtown Ketchikan.  View shows the northern end of the town.  Not seen, immediately to the right of this photo is the airport.

Hard to see in photo above, but most of what look to be boats in the water are actually floatplanes.

Above, approaching the dock at Ketchikan.

Above, note Floatplane on takeoff.  Ocean Princess on right, Volendam in center.

Our suite, 9008, on Norwegian Wind, Port of Ketchikan in view.

Cruise ship dock above, looking at downtown (just the other side of the buildings).  View is facing south.

Above, cruise ship pier, looking north.

Fish ladder, near Creek Street.

Above and below,  hard to see, salmon going upstream.

Hundreds of Salmon are ready to make their way up the river.

Creek Street straddles a major spawning river for salmon.

Above, another view of Creek Street with Joy.  Below, more salmon.

Salmon congregate at the mouth of the river.

Floatplanes are a major form of transportation in Alaska.  There are no roads that lead out of Ketchikan.  Taken from downtown, floatplane climbing above the stern of the Ocean Princess.

Ketchikan, dubbed "Alaska's First City" in the days of the steamship as it was the
first Alaskan port to mail service and supplies from the south.

Taken from the Bridge next to Creek Street.  Ocean Princess in background.

Lots of rain = Green!
