Photographed while dry-docked at Bremerton (WA), the Dakota was at one time
America's largest merchant vessel. Cargo was very important to liners of this era,
as evidenced by the number of masts and cargo booms seen below. Launched
1904 for the Great Northern Steamship Co, the "Dakota" lead a very brief life.
Trans-pacific service from the West Coast to the Far East, she ran aground in 1907 off of
a reef near Yokohama. No loss of live, but little was salvaged. She was scrapped on the
reef. For over 20 years, she and her sister were the largest ships built in the US. Her
sister, the "Minnesota", faired better, serving several owners until her
scrapping in 1924. "Dakota", 20,700 gross tons, 300 1st class and 2,400
passengers in steerage.

The postcard below, postmarked in Fresno in 1906, shows the "Minnesota"
