NCL America

"Pride of America", Largest US Flagged Passenger Ship Ever!

Largest passenger ship ever to fly the American flag at 81,000 GRT (gross registered tons).  The SS United States, although the fastest passenger liner ever built, is only about 54,000 GRT.  Completed 2005.  Port of registry Honolulu.  US crew.  She will no doubt remain the Pride of the US Merchant Marine for many years to come.

The pictures featured below were taken July 8, 2005, roughly 2 weeks before the Pride of America began her regular service with 7 day cruises round trip from Honolulu.  This is a beautiful ship, and exceeded our expectations.  Although the theme of the ship is Americana, it is restraint and tastefully done.

For meetings, the ship features what is probably the finest meeting and conference room at sea,  the Diamond Head Auditorium.  Located on Deck 13 forward, it is light, airy, and designed like a theater in-the-round.

Above - Something you don't see everyday - a US port of registry on a large cruise ship!

Capitol Atrium

Initial focal point of the ship as you enter her.  Ship's reception, shore excursion desk, etc are located here.  Very comfortable seating areas.  Portions are patterned after the US Capital's Rotunda.

Above - Twin elevators, miniature version of Washington Monument stands between them.  Stairs lead up to a Hawaiian museum type display and Pink's Champagne Bar.

Diamond Head Auditorium

As the photos show, this is a circular meeting room, which can also be divided in two when required.  Used for business meetings (US flagged means US firms can take full deductions (always check with your accountant first!).  Also can be used for lectures while cruising Hawaii.  Note the video screens which are placed so that all seats can easily view.

Lanai Bar & Lounge

Above - The Lanai is a quiet, very pleasant lounge on Deck 13, right around the corner from the Diamond Head Auditorium.

Men's Room Tile, Deck 13

Above & Below - we debated about including these photos, but they do show some of the creativity and whimsy that went into some of the ship's interior design.  The women's restroom does not include tile work "pictures".

Dining & Bars

Above - Hard to see in the photo, but at various locations throughout the ship, there are flat screens such as above.  The same screen can also be viewed on your stateroom TV.  Dining is Freestyle (when and where you want), with a total of 8 restaurants.  The screen shows which are open, and how many seats remain, or if one is full.  The screen also has a section for larger parties - if you want a table to seat 6 or more, it shows which dining room has availability.  Great system!

Skyline & Liberty Restaurants - Decks 5 & 6

Above - Stairs leading from the Skyline Restaurant on Deck  up to the Liberty Restaurant on Deck 6.  These are the two large, "Main" Dining rooms aboard the ship.

Lazy J Texas Steakhouse

Napa Wine Bar

East Meets West - Sushi & Teppanyaki

Cadillac Diner

Jefferson Bistro

If you are wondering why a tad of French influence in this dining room, remember Thomas Jefferson was our  Minister to France (Ambassador).  This dining room is much brighter than the photos show, we managed to underexpose them a bit!

Aloha Cafe aka the Buffet - Deck 11

Above - The "Kid's Cafe" set aside in a corner of the buffet - short seats, short chairs, keeps kids nicely away from adults wanting a bit of quiet!

Above - Yes, a tad "bright", but the chairs and carpet in this portion of the buffet fit into the Aloha spirit!

Gold Rush Saloon - Deck 11

John Adams Coffee Bar - Deck 5 in the Capitol Atrium

Above - The lifejacket by the passenger indicates lifeboat drill in the next 10 minutes, and sailing in 30!

Hawaii Museum - Kumu - Deck 6

Above and Below - Starboard side of Deck 6 around the Atrium features a museum type display of Hawaiian history and culture.

The Shops, or...Newbury Street

Above - Pride of America features a golf pro shop, very well stocked.  Golf packages are available through the line at each island, and are very popular.  This ship overnights in Kauai and Maui, and basically spends two days at the Big Island (Hawaii), so there is lots of time for golfing on some of the world's most beautiful courses!
